Cheap Soundproof Techniques vs Soundproof Curtains

All throughout the home and garden or home improvement industry, you will notice that words like soundproof are used flagrantly for products that do not deliver results. One such product are soundproof curtains. Designed to help eliminate the sound transmission of noisy neighbors through your walls, soundproof curtains often fail to meet the expectations of customers. A simple check into the product's packaging will often reveal that no curtain could actually be soundproof. As a reference, it takes about 8 inches of solid poured concrete to completely soundproof a wall. There is simply no way to include that much mass into a fabric designed to hang off the wall. At the most, you can get noise reducing curtains, but they will never be sound proof.

When purchasing soundproofing products, always check to see what the advertised STC or sound transmission class is rated at. If a product does not even advertise an STC it is probably not worth the investment. However, if you are looking for a solution to your noisy neighbor there are other cheap alternatives to soundproof curtains.

Cheap Soundproofing Techniques

The intentions of soundproof curtains are great, as they are targeting the highly inefficient windows in our homes. However, there are more effective cheap soundproofing techniques that actually work. The easiest way is to make sure your room is air tight. Despite their appearance most windows and doors have large gaps around the frames that can easily be filled. By simply removing the trim around your doors and windows you can fill all of the gaps with a tube of caulk and a can of spray foam. It is also beneficial to take the outlet covers off of your receptacles and fill the gaps around them in the wall cavity. Once you make your room airtight using these inexpensive techniques, you can buy window treatments designed to enhance the appearance of your room rather than their promised soundproofing ability.
